Corduroy is a wonderful material that works well in a whole host of garments from trousers to jackets, especially in more casual surroundings.

However, people frequently ask me about the many different cord weights and colour combinations available and the suitability of mixing and matching these. So, without further ado, here is my advice...


Firstly, I would caution against wearing two different weights of corduroy in tandem, as this does not work very well visually. For example, If you’re planning on wearing a needlecord jacket, I would wear cotton drill type trousers instead of another weight of cord.

When it comes to cords in bold colours such as red, I see no problem in wearing them practically anywhere. Be advised that they do make a statement, so all that is important is that you are confident in wearing them. I have a pair of red cords myself and wear them all the time. I tend to find that the older they get, the better the colour becomes.

Try not to wear them too smartly, though.
